Description
Crocuses are related to Iridaceae (Iridaceae). Their species are native to Asia, Europe and North Africa. There are many varieties that can be summarized under the term crocus hybrids. The name crocus comes from Greek and stands for the thread, with respect to the mostly yellow stigma. Saffron comes from a kind of crocus (Crocus sativus) that blooms in the fall. Other species bloom from late January to April depending on the variety and vary greatly in color. Crocuses are considered harbingers of spring. Before the last snow has melted, they sprout out of the earth. Crocuses can transform the garden into a small sea of color.
