Description
With its beautiful purple flowers and its intense, floral fragrance, lavender brings the incomparable flair of Provence into every garden. It contains valuable essential oils, tannins, saponins and rosmarinic acid, which makes it a particularly versatile plant. In the kitchen it can be added to Mediterranean meat dishes and salads.
Our tips:
- Bee friendly
- Requires full sun, in a very warm and sheltered location
- The soil should be sandy, gravelly and dry
- The lavender seeds should be sealed and stratified in the refrigerator on damp sand for a week before sowing to encourage germination
- Direct sowing only after the last frost
- Self-sowing is possible if the plant feels comfortable
- Does not require fertiliser - adding compost once a year is sufficient
- Water sparingly
- The flowers should be harvested before they fully bloom, ideally around noon, and dried immediately afterwards
- Protection against frost is only necessary at temperatures of several degrees below 0C
- Weak consumer of nutrients
- Suitable for balconies
- True to type seeds
- Good neighbours: thyme, sage, oregano
- Bad neighbours: roses
- Crop rotation: 4 years
