Saflax Cercis siliquastrum

Cercis siliquastrum, also known as the Judas tree, can grow up to 6 m tall. It blooms profusely in May with spectacular pink blossoms and has pretty heart-shaped leaves which turn a beautiful yellow shade in autumn. Decorative brown pods adorn the tree in the winter.

Tips:

• To improve the germination of the seeds, place them in the refrigerator for a week and soak them in room temperature water overnight before sowing.
• After sowing, cover the seed pot with cling film with a few holes poked in it.
• Remove the cling film every 2 to 3 days for about 2 hours to prevent mould.
• Place the seed pot in a bright place at a temperature of 20 to 25°C.
• Keep the potting soil moist but not wet.
• This tree needs a warm location.
• If you grow the tree in a pot, fertilise it monthly with fertiliser for potted plants.
• When grown in a pot, the tree should be kept at a temperature between 8 and 15°C indoors over winter. Water moderately.
• Protect trees planted outdoors from frost in the first few winter seasons.
• Regular cutting back is not necessary.
• The flowers have a sweet and sour taste and are used as edible garnish in Asian and southern European cuisine.
